Yarraville Hotel HistoryIn the mid-nineteenth century the opening of transport routes encouraged development in Melbourne’s inner-west. ![]() Early photo of Yarraville Hotel Yarraville was first subdivided in 1855, with many of its streets named after Victorian goldfields. Blue Edge is on the corner of Ballarat and Ovens Streets. Melbourne’s west spans across a vast basalt plain, and this basalt provided road-making and building materials (bluestone). The Yarraville Hotel was built in 1874 by local quarryman, Robert Otter, probably using bluestone from his ‘Greenhythe’ quarry. The exterior of the original hotel building is largely intact, which is rare in inner-Melbourne. An important facet of the Blue Edge project is the restoration of the bluestone to its original beauty. ![]() Yarraville Hotel, 1973 |
